Virals Attack the Milagro Casino Hotel

The Passage (Justin Cronin Edition)

The attack on the Milagro Casino Hotel shatters a brief moment of intimacy and turns the building into a trap. A viral takes Sara, and Peter, Alicia, Hollis, and the others are forced to flee through rooms and corridors as more infected creatures pour in. Their escape depends on improvisation: a copper pan’s reflection holds one viral’s attention long enough for Alicia to throw a grenade, setting off an explosion that engulfs the gas-filled hotel.

The attack begins

Peter and Sara are together when Sara suddenly looks past him toward a tower across the street. She says she has seen something there, though Peter cannot make it out through his nightscope. Amy arrives clutching a globe and grips Peter’s arm, pulling him away from the window. The warning comes too late: the glass explodes inward, knocking Peter across the room as a viral bursts through and then vaults back out. In the confusion, Peter hears Sara cry out. When the others rush in, Sara is gone.

Hollis takes charge amid the shock, ordering everyone to be quiet and promising Michael that he will get Sara back. He packs extra ammunition and says he saw three virals take her. Peter and Alicia recognize that the offer of a route toward Sara may be a trap: Peter believes the blocked streets have funneled them into this place. He nevertheless chooses to go, unwilling to leave Sara behind after already having left Theo behind. Before setting out, he reminds Amy that a viral must be shot through the breastbone; she nods as the group gathers its gear.

Flight through the hotel

The escape becomes a running fight. A warning cry sends Alicia diving through a window, and Peter sees a mass of pale-green light surging toward the building: the street is full of virals. Hollis fires while Peter manages two shots before Alicia pulls him away. They flee through a rear door and a low, narrow hallway, pursued by attackers. Peter fires until his rifle is empty; Alicia keeps dragging him onward, down stairs and into the hotel’s below-ground kitchen.

There, Peter seizes a heavy copper frying pan and positions himself between Alicia and a female viral crouched on a steel table. The creature’s hands are ringed, and it sways without attacking. Alicia realizes that it is watching its reflection in the pan. Peter moves the pan slowly, keeping the viral’s gaze fixed on the image of its own face, while the creature makes a mournful, nasal sound. The brief pause offers a way out, but the room is crowded with gas and the pursuing virals are close behind.

The explosion and its aftermath

Alicia urges Peter to use a grenade, despite the confined kitchen, because the room is full of gas. She frees one from her belt and throws it in a clean arc behind the viral. Its gaze leaves the pan to follow the grenade as it lands on the table and rolls to the floor, giving Peter and Alicia time to run. They reach a loading dock and dive over its edge as the grenade detonates; a second, deeper blast follows when the gas ignites. The shock wave strips the air from Peter’s lungs, and debris and glass rain down as fire spreads upward through the hotel.

Alicia pulls Peter away from the burning building, and they take cover behind an overturned, rusted car on the south side. Both are bleeding. Above them, another series of explosions sends a huge fireball through the hotel, bathing the street in orange light and scattering flaming debris. Peter asks whether the others escaped, but Alicia cannot tell. The attack has turned their attempted rescue into a desperate separation: Sara has been taken, the hotel is burning, and the survivors’ immediate concern is simply to get clear.

The hotel becomes a trap

The attack turns the Milagro Casino Hotel from a place of apparent refuge into a constricting route through which the group must keep moving. In the dark, the danger is not a single attacker but a street full of virals pressing into the building. Peter and Alicia retreat through a rear door and a low, narrow hallway as creatures burst in behind them. Peter fires at the doorway until his rifle runs dry; Alicia pulls him onward, down a flight of stairs and into the hotel’s deep, below-ground kitchen.

There, the pursuit narrows to one female viral, crouched on a steel table. Peter grabs a wide copper frying pan from above the stove and holds it between the creature and Alicia, using the pan as a shield. The viral’s fingers are covered in rings like those Peter had seen on the slims at the card table. Its hands flex and its shoulders sway, but it does not attack. Alicia identifies what holds its attention: its own reflection in the copper. Peter shifts the pan, and the viral follows the reflected face with its eyes, making a mournful, nasal moan. The pause is unnerving but useful; it buys them a moment in a room where gas fumes make the air hard to breathe and the building could ignite.

Improvised escape and unresolved losses

The reflection only holds the viral for a moment. Alicia tells Peter to use a grenade, reasoning that the gas-filled room will magnify its force; he agrees that they must act despite the confined space. She pulls the pin and tosses it behind the creature. As its attention shifts from the copper pan to the grenade’s arc, Peter and Alicia sprint for the metal-barred exit and reach a loading dock. The grenade detonates, followed by a deeper blast as the gas catches. They throw themselves over the dock’s edge while a shock wave and prow of fire burst out behind them.

They crawl clear as more pockets of gas explode and flames climb through the structure. Alicia pulls Peter across the street beneath the burning hotel, and they shelter behind the rusted hulk of an overturned car on its south side. Both are bleeding; above them, another explosion sends a fireball upward and flaming debris down into the street. Peter asks whether the others got out, but Alicia does not know. The attack leaves the rescue unresolved: Sara has been carried off, the hotel is being consumed by fire, and Peter and Alicia can only take cover and hope the others escaped.
